There is no right or wrong choice. The reality is, coffee is personal and the right way to make it is how you like it best!

1. The fundamentals

Great coffee starts with great beans, but ultimately your tastes will determine the type of coffee beans you prefer.  Coffee beans can vary significantly in flavour depending upon:

  • The country and region of origin (where it was grown)
  • The variety of bean - arabica, robusta - or a blend (the genus of coffea plant)
  • The roast type (the process of heating coffee beans)

But equally, great coffee doesn't end with great beans.  There are a number of other factors that contribute to the flavour and taste of coffee!  These include:

  • The texture of your grind (the consistency of your ground coffee); and
  • The brewing process.

The texture of the grind and the brewing process will typically be governed by what you have on hand at home. Understanding these will help you decide which beans and roast type is right for you.

Continue on to the next step and consider the answers to some key questions prior to choosing your coffee.

2. Your decision

Now that you have an understanding of the fundamentals, and the variability in flavour, you can narrow your selection further by considering a few questions.

It may seem like a simply question but is often overlooked in deciding what coffee beans best suit your needs.  The brewing style will dictate the type of coffee bean, roast type and texture of your grind best matched.  Refer to back to our Brew Guide to help you.  Our Roast Guide and Grind Guide can also help match coffee appropriate to your desired method.

Certain flavour preferences call for a certain type of coffee bean.  Whether you’re looking for a full-bodied ‘coffee that tastes like strong coffee’ or are more adventurous and in search of exotic floral or fruit flavours, the origin of the coffee bean and roast type will determine the flavour.  Refer back to our Bean Guide and Roast Guide to help you.

Tip: Use the filter in the Shop to search products by Flavour, Acidity and Body.

It is the final consideration to be given to your coffee habits or desires – think accessibility to equipment, ethical principles or even the way certain types of coffee make you feel.

If you don’t have any great, otherwise it may come with consumption, trial, and error.  For instance, some love the taste of coffee, but can’t handle the caffeine, and in this case would be preferential to seek out ‘decaf’ coffee beans.  Perhaps you don’t have a grinder and need to source ground coffee beans from one of our helpful vendors?  At the end of the day, it’s about you.

3. Your selection

You may ask yourself how do I know whether the coffee is good or not?  This is not an easy question to answer but, be guided by your preference as you will never be able to enjoy coffee if it tastes terrible.

Be certain that the quality of the specialty coffee available on myroast™ is superior to anything you may find from a major chain or your local supermarket.  For one, it hasn’t been sitting on a shelf for several weeks or months, meaning the coffee beans are fresher and the roast is recent.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to purchasing coffee. If you still not certain, we've provided a few further considerations that can help narrow the choice.

Still not certain about your choice of coffee?

Take the plunge and satisfy your curiosity. Our choices are often dictated by our tastes and personal preferences. If your still a little indecisive, considering a few more key points will help you narrow your choices.

Learning about the seller is a great way to start.

  • What do they offer?
  • How long have they been in the market?
  • What is there equipment?
  • What is there style?
  • Do they have reviews?

Finding out as much information as possible can help you decide whether they are worth a try, that said I’ve experienced some really great coffee from new sellers who have had little experience.  As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Coffee is processed differently across the market, and contributes significantly to the overall flavours. This is something that goes unknow to a lot of consumers in the market.

Understanding the process from start to finish will help you understand what you are looking for in purchasing coffee.

Coffee is grown in multiple regions across the World under different conditions and practices.  Each produce distinguishable flavours.  Countries are vast by area, and within these countries you can find multiple Regions.

By narrowing your search to regions as opposed to countries, you are able to isolate the exact coffee you are wanting each time you purchase.

Want to know more? Refer to our Bean Guide.

Tip: You can filter by region in country in the Shop.

Coffee is personal, and everybody has their favourite flavors or dislikes.  At the end of the day, your coffee will taste like coffee, however subtle hints will shine through all of your senses and remind you of certain flavours just like ‘wine’.  These are the nuanced complex notes that come from variances in coffee beans.  Some may be easier to detect than others, and understanding what flavour you are searching for can help narrow the search.

If all else fails, a seller will often display a quality score.  ‘Q Grade’ is a term that you may have heard, but what exactly does it mean?  The ‘Q Grading’ system was developed by the Coffee Quality Institute in 2004.

It is effectively a scale by which coffee can be judged and developed with the aim of promoting standards within the coffee industry.  Its scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 100 being the highest quality.
